Cathal Gavin raises over 10k for Mayo Roscommon Hospice

Cathal Gavin (17) organised a concert of music and song on the 6th December in memory of his late aunt, Adelle Gavin who died last January from cancer.  He was motivated to try to help the very worthy cause that is the Mayo Roscommon Hospice and his plan came to fruition with the assistance of a cast of other local performers.

Cathal, who became known for his “Voice of an Angel” CD a few years ago, contacted his local Parish Priest Fr. Dermot Meehan with the idea of hosting a special event for charity. “Fr. Dermot kindly let me have the use of my local church for the evening and I then set about arranging the concert.”

“The night would not have been possible but for the other acts who joined me. In particular, I would like to extend a very big thank you to Anne Marie Gibbons (Mezzo Soprano), Hugh Francis (Tenor), St. Muredach’s Cathedral Choir and St. Muredach`s Cathedral Schola Choir, Ballina, and the Scoil Mhuire agus Padraig Swinford Secondary School Choir. Together they made it a very special night.  Musical Director, Regina Deacy from Ballina deserves immense credit as she co-ordinated us all on the night.”

Presenting a cheque for €10, 009.22 to Angelina Nugent of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice last week, Cathal said he was delighted the night raised so much money for the much needed charity which is dear to his heart.  “It is fantastic to have got such support from everyone. The church was full. There were hundreds at it and the generosity of everyone is greatly appreciated.”

At the time of Adelle’s passing last January, the young Swinford Tenor was overseas performing  at World Youth Day in Panama, Central America and missed her funeral. “I know my Aunt Adelle would be very proud” he said.

The “Voice of an Angel” CD released in 2015 raised over €23,000 in four months of sales and the proceeds went to the Foxford Alzheimer’s charity.
